About the qualification
The NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management was developed jointly by NEBOSH and Great Britain's Health and Safety Executive (HSE). It equips people who work in high-hazard process industries — oil and gas, chemicals, plastics, pharmaceuticals — with a broad understanding of the accepted principles and recognised industrial practices for the management of process risk.
It is aimed at managers, safety representatives, and health and safety advisors working in the process industries. The qualification is assessed by a single online multiple-choice examination (PSM1) covering four Elements. NEBOSH recommends around 28 taught hours plus ~20 hours of private study to prepare.
The four Elements
Process Safety Leadership
Leadership commitment, worker involvement, and the management systems that underpin a strong process safety culture.
Management of Process Risk
Risk assessment techniques, asset integrity, safe start-up/shutdown, permit-to-work, and contractor management.
Process Safety Hazard Control
Controlling hazards from chemical reactions, bulk storage of dangerous substances, and hazardous process operations.
Fire and Explosion Protection
Fire and explosion hazards, prevention and protection measures, and the purpose and features of emergency plans.
